Service in the Local Community

Service within the community is a key skill for any missionary and Kingfisher takes it seriously. As a new college it is vital to establish links with the local community and to benefit the local community. There are many ways for students to serve the community in East Birmingham and beyond. Specific details are still being finalised, and the following opportunities for local service are being evaluated for inclusion in the programme:

Establishing a café, possibly with Internet facilities, in the premises next to the training facility on Farmcote Road, Glebe Farm. This will involve the physical restoration of the buildings (which are currently almost derelict), as well as staffing the café and using it as a basis for evangelism.

Looking at how students can help the elderly people who live on the St Peter's site in Saltley (where Lyttleton House is).

Newbridge Baptist Church (part of CVC) is close to East Birmingham Hospital and already hosts a club for the partially sighted. Kingfisher College will investigate the possibility of working to help the hospital, possibly through missionaries visiting patients.

Saltley Baptist Church (part of CVC) currently runs an after-school club. Kingfisher College students may be able to assist with this or similar clubs.

Lyttleton House has a sports field. Kingfisher College is investigating the possibilities of evangelistic sports events. This may include liaising with local schools, who also use the field.

Kingfisher College has a linked ministry working with international students studying in Birmingham. Kingfisher missionaries will meet other international students, both Christian and non-Christian. This gives the opportunity for making great and long-lasting friendships. There is also the possibility of talking about God to people from strongly Islamic countries and countries that do not accept missionaries. Students who become Christians here and then go home to these countries can become internal missionaries - fire-starters with no linguistic or cultural barrier to cross.
