Serving In and Being Served By the Local Church
It is of key importance that all students become integrated into the life of
the local church, finding a social as well as a spiritual home there. By
building trusting relationships, learning from each other, we create the
opportunity, not only for practising conversation, but also for witness.
For all students, interactive Bible study at some level is a constructive way
of practising and consolidating what they have already learnt. A regular Bible
study (or home) group can provide the security that encourages speech.
Members of Kingfisher's supporting churches in East Birmingham play a key
role through helping with cultural excursions and by accepting one
to three students into their family life for a day, an evening meal, or even a
weekend.
Specific details of the links between local congregations and students are
still being finalised, but the strategy may involve:
Placement of students with local churches, so that they become
involved in the life of the church and are given opportunities to
serve and be served in a genuine two-way relationship;
Adoption of students by churches;
Adoption of students by church members or families;
Mentoring students to ensure their mental, physical and spiritual
welfare;
Involving students in a varied range of everyday activities:
Encouraging students by giving opportunities to practise speaking
English.
