A History of Christian Missions (the last 200 years)

An Evaluation of Missionary Organisations

The objective of this section of the module is to critically examine models of mission practices in the modern era of  Christian mission to the world.

This module will examine case studies of mission practiced in the world church in the last two hundred years. The module will be presented in two parts; part one focusing on the building of Christian community, and part two on the transformation of society. The module will evaluate how mission has integrated preaching the good news of the Kingdom with the bringing about of the Kingdom in practice.

Part One: Building Christian Community

  1. Evangelising the Nations: Hudson Taylor's China Inland Mission to reach China's millions. George Verwer's global Operation Mobilisation. 
  2. Translating the Bible: William Carey and the formation of the British and Foreign Bible Society. Cameron Townsend's Wycliffe Bible Translators.
  3. Establishing Churches: Henry Venn's self supporting, self governing, and self propagating churches. Roland Allen's spontaneous/indigenous churches. Donald McGavran's homogenous churches.

Part Two: Transforming Society

  1. Educating Society for Change - Alexander Duff's hope for the conversion of India through schools. Pentecostal social programme in Latin America. 
  2. Holistic Healing: Betel's ministry to drug addicts and alcoholics. 
  3. Economic development: The United Mission to Nepal Antersera 
  4. Social Justice: Liberation Theology in Latin America

The Holy Spirit and Mission

The objective of this part of the module is to enable students to reflect biblically and doctrinally on the nature and practice of mission in order to evaluate the nature of mission as it affects theology and practice.

This module includes a study of the biblical basis of pneumatology (role of the Holy Spirit) in mission together with an exploration of how such theology has been understood and developed in ongoing Christian doctrine and practice especially in the modern era.

The Relationship Between the Renewal Movements and the Resulting World Mission

This module includes a study of the various renewal and revival movements in the history of the church and its expansion, especially those which have emphasised the role of the Holy Spirit in the growth and development of the church.
